On August 26, 2011 we performed comprehensive Pre-Participation Examinations for the Olympic Education Center. The exam not only did physical and orthopedic exam but also utilized Functional Movement Screening for movement patterns and ImPACT testing for neurocognitive evaluation. Each individual exam was reviewed and guidelines/ recommendations were given for each individual to help improve performance
Marquette Area Public Schools recently passed that all athletes participating in athletics will be required to take a baseline ImPACT test for participation. This is a 30 to 40 minute neurocognitive test to assess individuals memory, reaction time and processing speed.

HAND THERAPY SERVICE -
Spring is here and folks are back outside on their bicycles! Mountain biking is an exciting sport that carries a certain amount of risk of injury. By understanding the effects of stress on the upper extremities and the prevention of stress-related injuries, riders can ensure their mountain biking adventures are safe and fun.
The Hand Therapy Service at Marquette wants to make you aware that injuries to the hand and wrist can become more pronounced and if not treated correctly may sideline the athlete for the entire summer. Read More

Since the Fall of 2009 Marquette General Sports Medicine and Marquette General Neuropsychology have been working together to implement ImPact testing with the Marquette Senior High Football teams.
ImPact is the first and most widely used computerized concussion evaluation system. Given the inherent difficulties in concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing. Computer-based concussion assessment can help to objectively evaluate the concussed athlete’s post-injury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus preventing the cumulative effects of concussion. In fact, neurocognitive testing has recently been called the “cornerstone” of proper concussion management by an international panel of sports medicine experts.
The first 10 minutes of the ImPact test is spent completing the basic medical history questionnaire and symptom levels. That is followed by approximately 20-25 minutes of tests. The 6 tests measure multiple aspects of the athletes thinking and memory, including:
Immediate Attention Span
Reaction Time
Working Memory
Verbal Memory and Visual Memory
Sustained and Selective Attention
Mental processing Speed
Teams can be tested on individual computers as a group. Marquette General Sports Medicine team is staffed by highly experienced professionals made up of, a sports medicine physician, a neuropsychologist, athletic trainers, and a neuropsychological technician.
If you are interested in having your team or individual athlete baseline tested before their specific sports season begins:
